About me

Claudia Cabrera was born on the 19th of October, 1967 in Calbuco, a town in the 10th region of Chile.

The artist began her art-related studies majoring in Graphic Design for Advertising in the INACAP institute in Viña del Mar, graduating in 1988. After this, she delved more deeply into the more artistic aspects of design, such as painting the human figure, as well as studying art history. In the year 1995 she attended the “Atelier Juge–Sánchez” in Toulouse, France.  Here, she studied with the Spanish painter Eduardo Sánchez, specializing in oil painting. From 2000 to 2007, she studied painting in the workshop of Isabel Lorca Godoy, a period in which she strengthened her figurative style. After this, in the year 2011, she participated in the Human Figure Painting of the “Torpedo Factory Art Center”, in Alexandria, Virginia, USA, under the direction of the American visual artist Kurt Schwarz. Years later, between 2016 and 2018, Cabrera earned her “Diplomado en Estudios en Arte con Mención en Pintura” in Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

Her work focuses primarily on figurative painting. She is interested in the keen observation of the environment surrounding the object itself. She prioritizes detail and the modification of the model so that it generates a consistent and readable image that can successfully display her refined oil painting technique. The artist possesses a graceful and concise brushwork, creating works with a structured composition. Regarding color use, she’s subtle, harmonious and conscious of the palette that is present in nature itself, which speaks of her strong ability to translate what’s observed to the canvas. Due to this we can appreciate in her work atmospheric landscapes, portraits imbued with character and personality, as well as detailed and volumetric still lifes. She prefers larger formats because it enables her to expand her pictorial gesture. However she also works in small formats in which detail plays a central role in her work.

She has been inspired most by the works of Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, John Everett Millais, Max Liebermann and John Singer Sargent, all of whom are artists that use free brushwork and a strong style of composition.

Claudia Cabrera lives and develops her painting in Santiago de Chile.
